Suspected oil slick off Amanzimtoti beach

A suspected oil slick of about 50m width is being carefully monitored off Amanzimtoti’s main beach by tourism and environmental bodies in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism chairperson Jacques van Schalkwyk, they noticed the suspected slick earlier today and have dispatched boats to survey the dark spill, South Coast Sun reported.Environmental authorities, the beach manager and harbour authorities have been notified and continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.

In a separate case, a US judge said energy giant BP faced a maximum fine of $13.7 billion (R161.17 billion) for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, a sum reduced by several billion dollars.A fine of up to $18 billion (R212.41 billion) had originally been set as a possible penalty, based on government estimates that 4.19 million barrels of oil were released into the Gulf of Mexico, AFP reported.

US Federal Court Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans said the penalty should be based on only 3.19 million barrels.
