Two suspects in the kidnapping case of six Pietermaritzburg men were remanded in custody by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court for further investigation yesterday.

The state also wants to confirm the addresses the suspects gave them during their arrest on Saturday evening.

The men, whose names are being withheld until they plead, were found driving a vehicle belonging to one of the six men who were kidnapped while leaving a local gaming and betting establishment on the evening of Good Friday.

Their arrest led to the subsequent rescue of the victims, aged between 26 and 28, in Newlands West in Durban.

They were tortured with burning plastic, suffocated and beaten while their captors demanded a R120 000 ransom from the family of one of the victims.

The targeted victim’s mother, whose name is being withheld for security reasons, told The Witness on Monday that the motive for the kidnapping could have been to extort money from her family.

She said only a person who knew her family’s affairs would know that they were expecting large sums of money following the death of her daughter.

They are due to again appear in court on Tuesday.
