Thousands of litres of diesel spilt in Centurion highway accident
The trailer containing approximately 6 000 litres of diesel rolled over after it jack-knifed.
About 4 000 litres of diesel spilt over three lanes when a tanker jack-knifed on the N1 highway near the N14 Brakfontein interchange on Tuesday evening.
The interchange was closed after the incident, which happened at around 18:40.
No one was injured.
CERT-SA spokesperson Ruan Heyns said the incident had initially been reported as a collision.
“However, upon arrival, it was found the diesel tanker and its trailer had jack-knifed resulting in the spillage,” Heyns said.
“The trailer, which contained approximately 6 000 litres of diesel, had rolled over and was spilling large amounts of it across the highway.”
“The scene was declared a Hazmat scene and the highway was closed for traffic.”
The scene was then cleaned and the highway again re-opened for traffic.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso confirmed the incident.
“Officials closed the tanker to prevent further spillage and notified environmental management who also came to the scene.”
Mabaso said the owner of the tanker had arranged for a private clean-up team to tend to the scene.
