Police have called in three suspects for questioning as they intensify their investigation into the murders of nine women whose bodies were found in Kempton Park over a two-month period.

Acting police minister Feroz Cachalia said a multidisciplinary team established earlier in the week is now headed by Lieutenant General Senthumule, who is part of the national police leadership.

“She is being assisted by General Khumalo, head of crime intelligence, as well as General Mkhwanazi,” Cachalia said.

He said the additional resources would ensure the necessary detective capacity is in place to conduct a thorough investigation into the cases.

Cachalia said three suspects have now been called in for questioning, following the previous arrest of a suspect in connection with the July 15 murder of Busisiwe Mahlangu.

He said he was confident, based on the reports he had received, that the investigation would be successfully concluded.

High-visibility patrols deployed

Cachalia also confirmed increased police deployments in parts of Ekurhuleni, including KwaThema, Nigel and Germiston, following concerns about the safety of residents.

The deployments will include increased police visibility and roadblocks in the affected areas.

“The community of Ekurhuleni needs to understand that their safety is our priority, as well as our commitment to bringing the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to book,” Cachalia said.
