Tshwane ANC chair accused of abuse
However, ANC spokesperson Bafuze Yabo, warned members against causing divisions among themselves until the integrity committee had completed its work.
The ANC in the greater Tshwane region has condemned all forms of gender-based violence.
This came after its chairperson, Dr Kgoshi Maepa, was accused of abuse and intimidation, Rekord East reports.
“We condemn all forms of gender based violence as an organisation,” spokesperson Bafuze Yabo said.
The allegations were levelled against Maepa by the regional treasurer Simphiwe Mbatha.
Yabo said the allegations, which were being regarded in a serious light, would be referred to the ANC’s integrity committee.
“Due to the nature and seriousness of the allegations, we will allow for the internal processes of the organisation to be fully exhausted without prejudice to either of the parties in the matter.”
At the same time, the ANC stressed that it subscribed to the principle of “innocent until proven guilty”.
It cautioned against statements declaring Maepa guilty.
“We believe that the principle of natural justice – specifically that a person is innocent until proven guilty – should apply on this matter,” Yabo said.
“We have also noted the myriad statements making rounds on many platforms which seem to have apportioned judgement of the matter declaring the ANC regional chairperson guilty before any formal process of the law has unfolded.”
Yabo warned members against causing divisions among themselves until the integrity committee had completed its work.
“All members of the ANC are admonished to avoid spurring unnecessary divisions over this matter while it is being handled by the integrity committee and if needs are by the disciplinary committee.”
Yabo revealed a docket of intimidation and abuse had been opened at the Pretoria West police station, saying the organisation would allow the law to prevail.
“As an organisation that upholds and respects the law of our country we will allow the law to run its course without any interference,” he said.
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed a docket of intimidation had been opened against an official.
“No arrest has been made yet,” Masondo said.
