Tshwane bus driver hijacked amid taxi strike
“Our drivers have been warned not to operate in The Orchards area.” – Tshwane metro.
A Tshwane bus service driver was hijacked amid the looming taxi strike in The Orchards, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday morning.
“The driver was hijacked this morning in The Orchards area, north of the city, ostensibly by members affiliated to the National Taxi Alliance (NTA), who have embarked on protest action today,” metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said.
This comes after the NTA spokesperson, Theo Malele, during a radio interview on Wednesday, confirmed they would embark on a march to both the Department of Transport and Union Buildings over the Covid-19 relief funds promised to them by government.
“At our meeting with the taxi industry yesterday [Tuesday], they indicated that the protest would start at 10:00 and that it would be peaceful, hence we allowed our buses to operate early this morning and we were going to withdraw them just before the protest got underway,” Bokaba said.
“Our drivers have been warned to not operate in The Orchards area.”
Various other road blockages have been reported throughout the city, including Solomon Mahlangu Road in the east of Pretoria.
