It is understood the Boks vs All Blacks clash would be a warm-up game ahead of the 2023 World Cup in France, with England also considering playing one of their warm-ups away from the historic venue.

Whether the potential fixture between the South Africans and the Kiwis would constitute part of an abbreviated Rugby Championship, or a one-off ‘friendly’ is unclear.

There is a precedent for international clashes at Twickenham, as Argentina faced the Wallabies at the ground in 2016.

The All Blacks are also accustomed to playing at neutral venues, such as Tokyo and Chicago, while the Boks played Wales – their opponents in three home Tests in July – in a once-off Test in Washington DC in 2018.

The two sides will kick off the 2022 Rugby Championship at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit (6 August) and at Ellis Park in Johannesburg (13 August).
