Two arrested during house break-in
A suspect has been shot and another injured during a housebreaking and theft incident in Birchleigh, Kempton Park, on the East Rand.
Norkem Park police spokesperson Captain Lesibana Molokomme confirmed two suspects have been arrested, Kempton Express reported.
“On arrival at the scene, they cornered the suspects in the yard. One suspect, after realising they were cornered, pulled out a firearm and pointed it towards the security officers. The officer, for fear of his life, shot him in the leg,” said Molokomme.
Molokomme added the firearm has been taken for forensic testing to verify if it was fake.
The second suspect was arrested while trying to jump over a barbed wire fence and sustained injuries.
Both suspects were taken to hospital for treatment under police guard.
The suspects were found in possession of two cellphones, a hand watch and other items.
Both suspects, aged 19 and 20, will appear in Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court after being discharged from hospital.
They will face charges of housebreaking, theft, pointing of a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
In January, a 17-year-old boy stabbed a suspected robber after the man broke into the boy’s home in Waterloo Crescent, Pinelands, in KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Bongumusa Manqele said an armed robber was believed to have entered a house in
Waterloo Crescent through the roof and confronted the boy.
The suspected robber’s accomplice had been waiting outside the property.
“The boy allegedly heard the man breaking through the ceiling and went to the kitchen, where he picked up a kitchen knife.
There was a confrontation. The boy stabbed the robber in self-defence. During the confrontation, the boy was also stabbed in the head and hand by the robber,” said Manqele.
The robber died on the scene, while the accomplice fled on foot.
