Two arrested for Benoni hijacking
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a suspected hijacking in Farrarmere, Benoni, in Gauteng.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said at about 11am on Thursday, members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit approached three suspicious individuals who were loitering on the corner of Kei Road and Cambridge Street,Benoni City Times reported.
After observing the three suspicious-looking individuals for some time, the metro police approached them, added Kgasago.
“The one on his feet bolted and jumped into a white GWM sedan. The two suspects who were sitting tried to run away, but one was arrested by the EMPD officer, and the other was caught by community members,” said Kgasago.
Two unlicensed firearms, a .45 pistol and a 9mm short pistol were recovered.
The man who had jumped into the car sped away with a fourth suspect who had been waiting in the vehicle.
The vehicle was later found abandoned in Brentwood Park, but the two suspects had escaped.
Upon further investigation, the police discovered the vehicle had been hijacked last month in Sandringham, Johannesburg.
The two arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates’ Court soon for possession of a stolen vehicle and two unlicensed firearms, which had their serial numbers filed off.
OnEMPD Wednesday, four suspected hijackers were arrested in Tembisa, on the East Rand.
Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said a red Nissan Hilux was recovered within an hour after four gunmen hijacked its driver.
“The victim was hijacked in Emoyeni Section and also robbed of eight cartons of cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of CASH
,” added Kgasago.
Kgasago said an hour later, police traced the four men and their getaway BMW to Tembisa and arrested them.
