Update: CPF member suspended after drunk driving arrest in Port Shepstone
Authorities have stressed the importance of accountability among community policing volunteers.
The UGU District CPF Board has confirmed that one of its members has been suspended after being arrested for drunk driving during a roadblock in Port Shepstone on Friday.
The Witness reports that the member, who belongs to the Umtentweni CPF Subforum under the Port Shepstone police station, was stopped during a multidisciplinary roadblock operation that involved police, the Road Traffic Inspectorate and Ray Nkonyeni Law Enforcement.
According to the MEC of Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, this was an operation that ran through Friday night into the early hours of yesterday morning.
The CPF member was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The UGU District Board confirmed that the member was not a senior member but an ordinary patroller who regularly volunteered for duty.
He was granted R1 000 bail and is expected to appear in court soon, according to a statement issued by the board.
“By direction of the District CPF Disciplinary Committee, the Port Shepstone Station and the Umtentweni CPF Subforum, the arrested member was notified of his immediate suspension from all and any CPF activities,” the UGU District CPF Board said.
The board added that the member has apologised to the CPF and the public for any inconvenience or disrepute caused by the incident.
The board said it will continue monitoring the case while reinforcing awareness among members about the code of conduct expected from CPF volunteers.
Duma welcomed the decisive ‘leadership of the chair of the Ugu Disciplinary Committee’.
“We are receiving overwhelming messages of support from CPF, ratepayers associations and ordinary members of society. We commit to work together with CPFs and ratepayers associations moving forward to clean our road networks,” Duma said.
“Families have been destroyed by drunk motorists, who are a tiny minority. Removing them from our road networks will ensure the safety of road users.”
