Victims and heroes of 2017 Knysna fires honoured

A Western Cape town has paid tribute to those affected by a devastating fire that destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced residents.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held in front of the Knysna Municipality the past weekend to remember those affected by the devastating June 2017 fires that ravaged Knysna and surrounding areas, reports Knysna Plett-Herald.

The ceremony was led by Mayor Thando Matika and Councillor Jason White together with members of the municipality’s fire services. This year marked nine years since one of the most destructive disasters in the town’s history.

The June 2017 fires destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of residents, leaving a trail of devastation across the greater Knysna area.

The broader June 2017 Fires Commemoration Programme, which had originally been scheduled to take place this month, has been postponed to June 27.
