Video: 2 bystanders killed in deadly CIT robbery in Boksburg
Explosions, gunfire and a burning vehicle left residents shaken as armed suspects made off with cash after a violent heist in Dawn Park.
Police have confirmed that two bystanders were shot and killed during a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on Barry Marais Road in Dawn Park in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, yesterday afternoon.
Boksburg Advertiser reports that, according to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, it is reported that a cash vehicle was rammed from behind by a silver Mercedes-Benz, causing the truck to overturn onto a Quantum minibus taxi carrying seven occupants.
“Five of the passengers sustained injuries and received medical treatment, while the other two escaped unharmed,” says Nevhuhulwi.
Approximately eight suspects then bombed the cash vehicle and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
“Gunshots were exchanged between the suspects and members of a nearby security company [that] responded to the incident,” Nevhuhulwi adds.
Two bystanders were caught in the crossfire and declared dead on the scene.
Police have urged members of the public not to approach scenes of CIT robberies or attempt to collect money scattered from the vehicles, as this poses serious danger.
Nevhuhulwi also reminded the community to remain alert and report any suspicious or criminal activity to the SAPS Crime Stop line on 08600 10111.
Police investigations are currently ongoing.
Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (Dems) spokesperson, William Ntladi, says the fire department responded from Vosloorus with six personnel and two officers.
He says when they arrived, a Mercedes-Benz sedan was on fire and people were lying across the road.
A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, told Boksburg Advertiser that he was working in his garden when he heard two loud explosions.
“I then heard gunfire. I immediately ran inside the house. The shooting went on for about 13 minutes. It was terrible,” he said.
