Waste services back in full swing in Tshwane metro
Waste collection services in the city are back after an agreement was reached with striking workers.
The Tshwane metro said it would be returning to normal weekly waste collection schedules this week, following a labour dispute with striking waste collectors. Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said this came after an agreement was reached between the municipality and the striking workers during a meeting on Wednesday.
He said a catch-up plan for missed days has been implemented for regions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Mashigo said the metro had a six-month contract with the current private service providers that would expire in July. This follows after waste collectors went on strike last week Monday, which resulted in residents’ rubbish not being collected in various parts of Tshwane.
Striking contractors not only refused to collect any waste but also unlawfully blocked access to all landfill sites in the area. Garden refuse sites were also affected.
