Watch: 2 uMhlanga beaches closed amid wastewater pump station failure
Two uMhlanga beaches have closed temporarily after a pump station failure blamed on foreign objects blocking the system.
uMhlanga’s Bronze and Main swimming beaches were temporarily closed today following a pump station failure at the Ohlange Wastewater Pump Station.
Northglen News reports that, according to the eThekwini Municipality, the failure was caused by foreign objects obstructing the system.
In a video shared by the City, municipal workers are seen removing rags that had lodged inside the pump, leading to its breakdown.
Remedial work underway
“Remedial work is already underway, including the declogging of pumps to remove inappropriate waste such as rags, animal carcasses and other household items not intended for sewer lines,” the City said in a statement.
“We strongly urge the public to dispose of waste responsibly. Irresponsible disposal directly undermines sewer infrastructure, disrupts services, and negatively affects the environment, resulting in the temporary closure of beaches enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”
Second wastewater setback
The news comes days after work at the uMhlanga Wastewater Treatment Works ground to a halt after the main contractor downed tools, allegedly due to non-payment by the eThekwini Municipality.
