Watch: Pump station failure forces closure of uMhlanga Beaches

Foreign objects lodged in one of the pumps at the wastewater pump station led to the closures in uMhlanga.

TWO of uMhlanga’s swimming beaches (Bronze and Main) have been temporarily closed today following a pump station failure at the Ohlange Wastewater Pump Station.

According to the eThekwini Municipality the failure was caused by foreign objects obstructing the system.

In a video shared by the City, municipal workers are seen removing rags that had lodged inside the pump, leading to its breakdown.

“Remedial work is already underway, including the declogging of pumps to remove inappropriate waste such as rags, animal carcasses, and other household items not intended for sewer lines,” the City said in a statement.

“We strongly urge the public to dispose of waste responsibly. Irresponsible disposal directly undermines sewer infrastructure, disrupts services, and negatively affects the environment, resulting in the temporary closure of beaches enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”

The news comes  days after work at the uMhlanga Wastewater Treatment Works ground to a halt after the main contractor downed tools, allegedly due to non-payment by the eThekwini Municipality.
