Watch: 50m sinkhole causes chaos in Bangkok

Quick action by authorities prevented casualties when a huge section of road collapsed in central Bangkok.

A giant sinkhole opened on a busy street in Bangkok, Thailand, this morning. The 50m-deep sinkhole left cars balancing on its edge.

Power lines were pulled down and water was left gushing from a burst pipe.

“Dirt from an underground train construction was sliding in,” said Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul after visiting the site.

According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, the collapse happened on Samsen Road in front of Vajira Hospital.

The road had shown initial signs of sinking, with water seepage, at around 05:30. This gave traffic police time to secure the area before the road’s full collapse, at around 07:00 – an action that prevented many injuries, the news bureau said.

A nearby police station suffered infrastructural damage.

There were no injuries or deaths reported.

Social media footage showed how bits of the road slowly collapsed, increasing the sinkhole’s size.
