Watch: Another vulnerable building goes up in flames in Joburg
Days after a devastating fire killed more than 70 people, a suspected hijacked building in Marshalltown went up in flames.
Firefighters have once again been deployed to the Johannesburg CBD following yet another fire – this time in Marshalltown.
According to The Citizen, the blaze started on the first floor of a building that appears to have been hijacked.
“There are no injuries reported yet. Everyone was evacuated,” EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo told the publication.
The fire comes two weeks after 74 people, including seven children, were killed in a blaze at Usindiso Building, 80 Alberts Street – also in Marshalltown.
The building was also reportedly hijacked.
On Monday, City of Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying that their firefighters are on high alert due to a cold front impacting temperatures in the province. The increased use of heaters and fires to keep warm heightens the risk of blazes.
@CityofJoburgEMS #ColdFront expected to hit most parts of @CityofJoburgZA from tomorrow (Tuesday) towards the rest of the week residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices not to leave them unattended while in use to prevent fires at home. @CoJPublicSafety
