A building was ablaze at the University of Zululand’s (Unizulu) KwaDlangezwa campus on Monday as students’ protests over their safety intensify.

Students who live in off-campus accommodation say they are fed up with being victims of crime and started demonstrating on campus last night.

The protesters smashed windows and burned tyres and other items to make their voices heard.

According to Student Representative Council (SRC) president Nkosiyapha Dumisa, students are apparently angry over an increase in criminal activities at off-campus accommodation.

This after a student was reportedly killed and others were sexually assaulted in their cottages last week.

It is reported that a group of thugs, called amadabuka, have been terrorising students since 2019.

“We are having a meeting with university management later this morning (Monday) to discuss how we can find a resolution on this matter which has been a problem for a long time,” said Dumisa.

However, according to the students, campus chaos was triggered by a university statement which denied all students’ allegations over accommodation and safety.

Students are calling on the university to take over more residences, saying some properties owned by private landlords have raised concerns.
