WATCH: Incredible footage of whale calf and mom off eMdloti coast

Malcolm Burningham, a recreational drone pilot, spotted the whales around 700 metres off the eMdloti shoreline.

Emdloti resident, Malcolm Burningham, captured some spectacular footage on Monday afternoon of a humpback whale playing with its mother.

Burningham, a recreational drone pilot, said he was contacted by residents in the area who spotted the pair around 700 metres off the shoreline.

“We are incredibly lucky in eMdloti to often see dolphin pods swimming through the surf and in the past I’ve captured footage of them, but never a humpback whale and a calf. They were so docile and so at ease that it made filming them very easy. I was just so lucky to experience this,” he said.

Burningham said he has been bouyed by the response on social media. A short 30 second clip was shared on the eMdloti Umdloti 568 Community Facebook page.

“I’m passionate about nature and to be able to see the community react the way they did is fantastic. I’ve been lifted by some of the comments from residents which is always great to see. I have more footage which I’m editing now and will hopefully upload at a later stage,” he said.

In March this year, Glenhills resident Anup Rampiar’s clip of a pod of dolphins swimming alongside surfski paddlers went viral.
