Watch live: President to brief the nation with acting police minister

Tune in as President Cyril Ramaphosa and Prof Firoz Cachalia address the nation this afternoon.

South Africans are set to hear from the country’s leadership as President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the nation from the Union Buildings in Pretoria. He will be joined by Acting Police Minister Prof Firoz Cachalia, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 16:00.

The Presidency confirmed the briefing but did not outline the agenda. However, it comes at a time of mounting pressure on SAPS, prompting speculation that policing issues could be the briefing’s focus.

According to The Citizen, national police commissioner Fannie Masemola appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (April 21) to face four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act 1 of 1999. The charges stem from a R228m SAPS health services tender.

He is expected to return to court on May 13.
