A man died in Umbumbulu, south-west of Durban, yesterday (August 2) after he was run over, allegedly by an eThekwini Municipality water tanker during a confrontation between the community and the tanker’s driver, reports South Coast Sun.

Zothando Memela, who witnessed the incident, alleged that water tanker drivers tasked with supplying the community sell water to those willing to pay to have their Jojo tanks filled.

“Community members were tired of this and they confronted the driver,” said Memela.

The video shows community members surrounding the truck while it is on a rural gravel road.

The truck reverses a bit and a man jumps into the road in front of the truck. He is then bumped and the tanker comes to a brief rest with its front left wheel on top of the man’s body.

As community members start screaming, the tanker is seen leaving the scene while the man’s body is on the ground.

eThekwini spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the municipality is co-operating fully with the police and has also initiated its own internal processes.

In an update South Coast Sun reports that Mzila added that the municipality is not in a position to comment on the circumstances that led to the incident.

He said that eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba will meet with the deceased’s family later today (August 3).

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Netshiunda said the victim was taken to hospital where he later died.

 “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” read the statement.
