Warning: Not for sensitive viewers. The shooting happened in the parking lot when an apparent altercation broke out.
Police have arrested a 45-year-old man after fatal shots were fired at Menlyn Maine shopping centre on Monday morning, Rekord East reports.
The shooting happened in the shopping centre’s parking lot when an apparent altercation broke out.
The victim had been in the company of two other men when one of them allegedly approached the suspect. An altercation ensued, said police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.
“Preliminary reports further indicate that the suspect retreated to his vehicle and returned with a firearm, fired more than one shot and the man who was attempting to defuse the situation was hit,” she said.
Peters said the victim was declared dead on the scene.
Police seized the firearm allegedly used by the suspect for further investigation.
She said the motive behind the shooting was unknown “at this stage”.
“The arrested suspect will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon, on a charge of murder.”
A spokesperson for Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit Casper Visser said paramedics were called to the scene following the shooting.
Visser said the victim, believed to be in his 40s, later succumbed to his injuries after medics tried to resuscitate him for 15 minutes.
The shopping centre confirmed the incident.
“Menlyn Maine security was immediately on the scene and SAPS arrived soon thereafter, to take over,” a spokesperson said.
