Watch: NSRI dismisses false Hartbeespoort Dam road collapse video
The NSRI urges the public to verify information before sharing after a viral video falsely claimed a road near the Hartbeespoort Dam tunnel was collapsing.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is urging the public to exercise caution and refrain from spreading fake news following the circulation of a viral video falsely claiming the road near the tunnel at the Hartbeespoort Dam was collapsing.
The misleading footage has caused unnecessary panic and confusion, with the NSRI emphasising the importance of verifying information before sharing it, particularly during times of crisis.
As a trusted rescue organisation, the NSRI is calling on individuals to rely on credible sources and support efforts to ensure accurate communication for public safety and well-being.
NSRI spokesperson Arthur Crewe told the media today that they had been inundated with calls from concerned residents.
It is believed the video being shared is from an incident in China, not South Africa.
The Pretoria ICE Community Network also confirmed this morning that the tunnel is intact and operational, with no reports of any incidents or damage.
