WATCH: Racketeering charges raised in Zandile Gumede’s ongoing trial
The court set down a possible trial date for 18 July 2022.
Racketeering charges were raised against former eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede who appeared in the Durban High Court yesterday, 14 June. This in the ongoing case involving Gumede and the co-accused in a Durban Solid Waste tender that cost in excess of R430 million.
Berea Mail captured footage of Gumede leaving court yesterday morning.
“The state, represented by Senior State Advocate Ashika Lucken, handed in an amended indictment to the court with the addition of racketeering charges against the accused,” said spokesperson for the Directors of Public Prosecutions, KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Kara.
The case has been postponed until November with a trial date set for mid year in 2022.
“The matter was postponed to 30 November 2021 for request and response to further particulars by the parties. The court also set down a possible trial date for 18 July 2022,” said Kara.
Scores of supporters rallied for Gumede outside the Durban High Court.

Commenting on the postponed trial, supporter, Thandeka Ngidilkhubon said: “We feel bad because we know they are delaying the process because of politics. We know Ma Zandile is not guilty.”
Another supporter, Ncamsile Dawood added: “We feel they are delaying the process purposefully because they didn’t charge her for a long time. They are delaying the process because they don’t want a woman to lead. This is (gender) oppression.”
