Watch: Shootout in streets of Melville
Security guards who were overpowered by robbers, managed to send a panic signal to call for backup.
In a scene that reminds of the Wild West, a shootout between a security guard and robbers saw an innocent bystander injured in Melville this morning.
The incident took place on the corner of 4th Avenue and Main Road just before 09:00.
A driver was shot during an exchange of bullets between robbers stealing from a nearby pharmacy and private security guards.
Andre Aiton managing director at Beagle Watch security says, “A taxi pulled up to the pharmacy and a number of suspects exited the taxi and made their way into the pharmacy.
“At the time, there were two of our security guards outside the store and they were taken by gunpoint into the store.”
“The suspects took items off the shelves and searched through tills for money. While this was happening, our guards sent a panic button signal, calling for additional support.”
An exchange of gunfire between a security guard and the suspects followed.
Aiton says, “This carried on for two to three minutes, with the guard firing at suspects from behind a pole. Eventually, the suspects fled the scene in their taxi.”
Brixton Police Station confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Jeanette Backoff unable to confirm how many shots were fired during the incident.
The scene was cordoned off by law enforcement and the police and the area was closed to the public for a few hours.
The Brixton police promised to issue a press release about the incident soon.
Beagle Watch says they will work hand in hand with officers to understand what has transpired.
