Wearing a mask is no longer mandatory

The South African health minister has scrapped all remaining Covid-19 regulations on Wednesday night.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla has repealed all Covid-19 regulations, including wearing masks indoors and in public, limits on gatherings and border checks.

The Citizen reports that Phaahla published a notice to this effect in the Government Gazette.

The notice reads as follows:

“I, Mathume Joseph Phaahla, Minister of Health hereby repeal Regulations 16A, 16B and 16C of the Regulations Relating to the Surveillance and the Control of Notifiable Medical Conditions, made in terms of sections 90(1)(1), (k) and (w) of the National Health Act, 2003 (Act 61 of 2003), and promulgated on 4 May 2022 under Government Notice 2060, in their entirety.”

eNCA reports the minister’s decision follows a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council.

Phaahla and Mondli Gungubele, Minister in the Presidency, are expected to deliver a briefing about this notice at 11:00 today.
