Wild ‘cheetah’ cub spotted on highway
Two paramedics a reportedly spotted a cheetah cub on the R21 in Irene, south of Pretoria, during the early hours of Monday morning.
The paramedics, Tyran Blignaut and Samuel Neels, said they were driving on the road when they spotted the animal sitting in front of them before slowing down, according to Midrand Reporter.
Blignaut said at first they thought it was a small dog but as they got closer they saw it was a cheetah cub.
Blignaut said as they approached it, the cub ran into a field in the residential area of Irene, close to Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
He believed it was a young cub, aged between four- and eight-months-old.
He said they handed the information over to the animal control authorities in order to help catch the cub.
However, reports from community members looking for the animal say it may be a serval and not a cheetah cub.
Andre Snyman, founder of anti-crime group eblockwatch , asked the group’s Facebook members to help find the cub.
Snyman said information had been forwarded to professionals in order to help catch the cub.
He warned community members to contact him if the animal was seen.
“Please do not try to be a hero and catch it,” said Snyman.
Last year, A hyena was tracked and darted after it was spotted roaming the streets of Johannesburg.
The brown hyena was first spotted at the Randburg Civic Centre and is believed to have wandered into the city from a local nature reserve.
