Woman cons man out of cash in fake car buy

Ivory Park police in Tembisa, East Rand, have appealed to people who are selling their cars on the streets to beware of con artists.

Warrant Officer Meldah Sekgobela, Ivory Park police spokesperson, said a man was selling his car in Kaalfontein Extension 7 when a woman approached him with an offer, Tembisan reported.

“The car is a Renault Mégane, with the registration number VDN 799 GP. The woman told the seller his car was worth about R60 000. She took out her cellphone and pretended to transfer the money to his bank account. After a few minutes, the seller received a message stating R60 000 had been transferred to his account.

“The seller gave the woman the car keys and car papers and she drove off. The man went to the bank and has since alleged no money had been transferred to his account. The woman was nowhere to be found,” she said.

Sekgobela said anyone with information, can contact Ivory Park SAPS on 011-990-9600.

Meanwhile, in August, a freelance second-hand car salesperson, Wayne Stuart Fester, appeared in a Cape Town court after an alleged fraud victim undertook to pay her two bank loans for her.

This would have enabled the alleged victim, Zailia Adams, a police clerk, to obtain a single R143 000 loan to buy two used cars – one for herself, and one for her parents.

“I told Fester I needed a reliable car to get my child around, and our family car had mechanical problems. He said he can sort me and my parents out, and that he could get me a 2005 Toyota Tazz. He said he would sell [my parents’ old Chev] to pay the deposit for my Tazz, as well as a Clio for my parents,”

Eventually, instead of the Tazz, Fester offered her a Golf, which she accepted.

When she had to renew the Golf’s license, she managed to locate the previous owner who alleged Fester had disappeared with his car. However, the previous owner was willing to sell the Golf to her, she said.

Around the same time, she discovered Fester had transferred ownership of the Chev to his own name.

During proceedings, The State alleged Fester had no intention to settle the loan.
