Woman disarmed after hostage situation in Durban
Three people were held hostage at the McDonald's on Berea Road, and had to be treated for minor injuries.
A woman was disarmed after three people, believed to be her managers, were held hostage for more than two hours at the McDonald’s on Berea Road in Durban.
According to Advance Life Support Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, ALS Paramedics received numerous calls of an alleged hostage situation at around 13:30 yesterday.
“We arrived to find SAPS and multiple security companies already in attendance and made contact with the necessary SAPS authorities. A plan was put into place by SAPS and paramedics were asked to stand-by and the police devised a plan to penetrate the restaurant and overcome the situation,” explained Jamieson.
The Witness reported bystanders said the woman – armed with a knife – made a few appearances to the balcony overlooking the parking a number of times.
He added paramedics were stationed at both sides of the fast-food establishment and when the penetration took place at 16:30, paramedics were asked to enter and treat the victims, as well as the alleged perpetrator for injuries.
“Paramedics had found that the three hostages had sustained minor injuries and more of an emotional injury, and the hostage taker had sustained moderate injuries. The four people are currently being treated by paramedics before they will be transported to various Durban hospitals. The events leading up to the incident are unknown at this time,” Jamieson said yesterday.
