Woman unknowingly registered in fake marriage: 2 to appear in Polokwane court
Two foreign nationals arrested in Limpopo after a woman found she was fraudulently married without her consent.
Two foreign nationals, aged 39 and 57, are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Polokwane Review reports they were arrested during a joint police and Home Affairs operation on Wednesday at the Seshego Home Affairs office outside Polokwane.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the arrests followed a complaint from a 59-year-old woman who discovered she had been fraudulently registered as married to a foreign national without her knowledge or consent.
“The woman was informed of the illegal marriage when she visited the Department of Home Affairs for a personal inquiry. Records showed the unauthorised marriage was registered in Johannesburg on January 28, 2017,” his statement reads.
The case was reported to Polokwane SAPS, and a joint investigation with Home Affairs officials led to the arrest of the 39-year-old suspect, a manager at a Nirvana-based industrial bakery, on Thursday.
He has been charged with fraud.
“During the same operation, a second suspect was also arrested at the bakery for contravening the Immigration Act [13 of 2002], after he failed to produce valid documentation,” Ledwaba said.
Both are scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.
