Lady riders unite

International Female Ride Day was started by a Dutch Canadian, Vicky Gray. A renowned motorcycle racer and riding instructor, Gray's initial intention was to run events over several locations on the same day.

The event, however, spread across countries, and in 2010 also included South Africa. It is now held on the first Saturday in May worldwide.

The members of HOG Big Five Chapter in Mbombela organised a 90-kilometre ride for May 1 starting at Eastview BMW. Rain, however, put a spanner in the works and about 29 participants decided to do postpone their ride for safety reasons to May 2.

It is important to note though that this is not a Harley exclusive event. All bikes and scooters are welcome to participate. “The intention of the ride is to encourage ladies to step out of their comfort zones, to buy a bike and ride. It is fun, exhilarating and the friendships that are formed are good for the soul,” says local organiser Julia (Jules) Burger.

It is an awareness ride and not for charity. It is not a race or a rally but yes, spot prizes and other awards add to the fun element of the event.

So to all the ladies out there – get off your behind and get onto a bike. Contact Burger on 079-891-0842.
