Are online car searches driving sales?
Six of the most searched-for models in 2023 online also rank among the top 10 bestselling used models.

Analysing the frequency of car searches provides valuable insights into consumer preferences. But does this online interest translate into actual sales?
The correlation seems evident in the 2023 AutoTrader Annual Car Industry Report. Notably, six out of the top 10 most searched-for used models in 2023 also appear in the top 10 bestselling used models.
The top three most searched-for models, constituting just 0.3% of all models listed on the AutoTrader website, collectively accounted for 11.9% of all model searches in 2023, mirroring the same proportion observed in 2022.
The Volkswagen Golf led the search rankings in 2023, capturing 4.2% of the total search share with 19.3 million searches. This displaced the Toyota Hilux, last year’s top searched model, which garnered 4.1% of the total search share with 19 million searches, closely followed by the Ford Ranger with 17.2 million searches.
While the search landscape saw nine shifts in rankings and one new entrant, the top-selling Ford Ranger, ranked third in searches, dominated the sales charts with over 20 156 used car sales, constituting 6% of the overall sales figure.

Despite not featuring among the top 10 searches, the VW Polo Vivo secured the fourth spot in the 2023 sales ranking, selling 10 990 units. However, despite its popularity in searches, the VW Golf failed to secure a spot in the top 10 sales ranking. This suggests that while it may be a sought-after model, practicality and affordability might influence purchase decisions differently.
The 10 best-selling models in 2023, all aged between four and eight years, collectively represented 28% of all models sold.
