Discover Volkswagen’s legacy at the VW AutoPavilion

A must-visit destination for all Volkswagen enthusiasts.

In March 2004, the Volkswagen Group Africa plant in Kariega unveiled the revamped VW AutoPavilion, marking the inauguration of its very own heritage centre.

With a hefty investment of R13m, this visionary project aimed to provide a dedicated space for Volkswagen’s rich history and iconic vehicles, welcoming employees and automotive aficionados.

Over the past 20 years, the AutoPavilion has evolved into a focal point for Volkswagen enthusiasts, expanding its collection to showcase an array of exhibits. With an investment exceeding R5m, the AutoPavilion has doubled its vehicle displays and curated various exhibitions.

Among the 51 vehicles housed in the museum are iconic pieces featured in the “70 years of Volkswagen” exhibition, alongside an assortment of Volkswagen Beetles, concept cars, and vehicles representing the different brands manufactured in Kariega since the plant’s inception in 1946 (formerly known as SAMAD).

In addition to the exhibitions, the AutoPavilion has welcomed over 670 000 visitors over two decades, offering an exclusive glimpse into the plant’s production operations. Integrating factory tours into the AutoPavilion experience since its inception, the facility has conducted more than 350 000 tours, which are particularly popular among school groups.

Andile Dlamini, head of group communication, remarked, “The AutoPavilion is our platform for sharing Volkswagen Group Africa’s rich history with our customers. We take pride in preserving our heritage and telling our company’s story through this centre, and we look forward to continuing to share our automotive journey for years to come”.
