Mercedes-AMG G63 returns better, bolder and electrified

With the Mercedes-AMG G63 having been the most popular model for many years, the aim was to make its enhanced performance more tangible.

Mercedes has unveiled the latest version of its venerable G63, which retains its V8 powerplant assisted by Mercedes 48-volt tech.

“The G-Class is an automotive icon and the Mercedes-AMG G63 has been the most popular model for many years. This is both an obligation and an incentive for us. Our aim was therefore to make the enhanced performance even more tangible – both on- and off-road,” says Michael Schiebe, chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and  head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach business units.

First impressions are everything and the new G63 immediately distinguishes itself by way of its model-exclusive Manufaktur hyper blue mango exterior colour adorning the SUV’s revised physique. Changes to the G63’s exterior are mild but include a new AMG-specific front bumper, three vertical louvres in front of the air intake, stainless steel inserts on the bumper, Multibeam LED headlights, an AMG crest, and 20-inch AMG alloy wheels. The interior is characterised by a three-twin-spoke steering wheel, Nappa leather elements, two-tone leather seats, and a 12.3-inch driver and central displays as part of the MBUX system.

The new G63 is one of the few bastions of the V8 BiTurbo badge, and in this configuration, the 4l twin-turbocharged V8 is capable of producing 430kW and 850N.m. The Mercedes-AMG G63 can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 4.4 seconds and, when equipped with the AMG Performance Package, whittles that time down by 0.1 seconds. The powertrain also includes the firm’s 48-volt technology and an integrated starter-generator, affording an additional 15kW and 200N.m for short bursts. Mated to the V8 engine is a familiar AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

Beneath the muscular frame is the Mercedes AMG Active Ride Control suspension system with active hydraulic roll stabilisation and adaptive adjustable damping. The active hydraulic components replace the conventional mechanical torsion-bar transverse stabilisers.
