The best off-roading vehicle options

These off-roaders will make the perfect companion for you and your family on your next adventure trip. Take a look at some of the best options to suit your taste and your wallet.

Although the Easter holidays are done and dusted, many families are still planning to pack their vehicles and travel across the country to visit family and friends, explore new destinations and recharge their batteries. But what car is best suited for the job?

Looking at AutoTrader’s latest data gives us an idea of what South Africans want, with something to suit everyone’s tastes, wallets and requirements.

Suzuki Jimny

Compact and quirky as it may be, the Jimny has proven itself to be a robust and talented off-roader. With standard all-wheel drive and short overhangs, this little Suzuki easily scrambles over obstacles, often leaving larger (and more expensive SUVs) trailing in its wake. The 1.5L four-cylinder engine with 75kW and 130Nm of torque may not be the most powerful, but it is frugal, returning a claimed fuel-use average of 6.3L/100km. The average listing price for a used Jimny is R335 622, with an average mileage of 44 079km. It’s a great buy, but it’s best to look elsewhere if you’re a shrinking violet – the Jimny is a serious head-turner.

Isuzu D-Max

Moving on to a Japanese off-roader of a different kind, the Isuzu D-Max (once known as the KB) is the poster child for durability, beloved by the commercial sector and farmers for decades. More refined and luxurious than ever, three-year-old models can be purchased for an average of R446 023 with approximately 55 222km on the clock.

Opt for four-wheel drive and the D-Max becomes even more capable. Should you venture off the beaten path; the 4×2 option will be perfectly adroit on gravel roads. With a range of efficient and torque-rich turbo diesel motors, the D-Max is a compelling choice for your next road trip. While the ride won’t be as supple as an SUV, plenty of convenience features are on-board. Opt for the LX trim; you’ll enjoy leather seats, electric windows, a reverse camera, xenon headlights and more.

Toyota Land Cruiser

One cannot mention adventure and road trips without talking about Toyota, specifically the Land Cruiser. Japan’s favorite full-size SUV melds luxury and off-road ability like few cars can. The data tells an interesting story. Despite the average age and mileage of 21 years and 226 170km, the Land Cruiser has an average listing price of R357 996.

This tells us that Land Cruiser owners are loyal and have held onto their cars for decades and covered great distances. This speaks to the sheer usability and talent the big Toyota offers.

You can expect slightly higher petrol bills, but the Land Cruiser makes up for that with immense comfort, a spacious interior and the strongest reliability this side of a tank. Let’s not forget the Japanese brand’s wide-spread national dealer network, which adds peace of mind when venturing to another part of the country.
