Drive smarter, save fuel: Top tips for optimising car performance
With South Africans grappling with consecutive petrol price hikes, maintaining your car’s health and adopting efficient driving habits have never been more crucial.
Vishal Premlall, the national director of the Tyre, Equipment, Parts Association (Tepa) and the South African Petroleum Retailers Association, emphasises the importance of keeping your car in top condition to mitigate fuel consumption amid rising prices.
He highlights the impact of temperature, driving environment and vehicle maintenance on fuel efficiency. Neglecting service intervals or opting for short trips can significantly increase fuel consumption due to inefficient engine performance and increased air resistance.
Les Richardson, Tepa’s vice chairperson, offers 10 additional tips to maximise fuel efficiency:
- Maintain recommended tyre pressure
- Check wheel alignment regularly
- Keep the car clean and light
- Service the vehicle at required intervals
- Ensure correct tyre selection
- Check catalytic converter after 100 000km
- Utilise cruise control for consistent speed
- Avoid driving with windows open for improved aerodynamics
- Maintain control of the car rather than coasting in neutral
- Consider carpooling to reduce individual trips.
Premlall stresses the importance of journey planning using GPS apps to avoid traffic congestion and choose the most fuel-efficient routes. Beyond fuel savings, proper car maintenance enhances longevity, reduces breakdowns and preserves resale value.
