BMW only recently released teaser footage of the new-generation 1 Series. However, it seems we didn’t have to wait too long for the fourth generation to make its global debut. Indeed, the Bavarian brand just whipped the wraps off the box-fresh 1.

From an exterior point of view, the new 1’s silhouette is reminiscent of its forebear’s. However, compared with the previous generation, it’s bodywork has grown in size, especially in length. The new iteration measures 4 361mm nose to tail, making it 42mm longer than the outgoing model. Width comes in at 1 800mm (1mm more than the previous 1), while the overall height has increased by 25mm to 1 459mm. The wheelbase remains 2 670mm.

Continuing with the exterior, the new 1’s front end, BMW says, it’s ‘significantly’ lower than before to enhance its ‘sporty’ character. The standard-fitment LED headlamps (adaptive units are available as an option), which incorporate vertical daytime-running lights, flank a revised interpretation of the German marque’s signature kidney grille.

Viewed from the side, the ‘dynamic’ wedge-shaped profile of the 1 tapers towards the rear. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are present, with the M135i model gaining 18-inch items. At the back, a spoiler has been fitted to the roof. There are also two-part taillamps.

The new 1 is available with the choice of nine body hues. The exterior colour palette includes two solid and seven metallic finishes. In addition, customers will also have the option of specifying a contrast roof, a first for a BMW.

Stepping inside, BMW’s Curved Display arrangement takes centre stage. This setup comprises 10.25-inch information and 10.7-inch control displays. The infotainment system incorporates the automaker’s Operating System 9 software. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included in the package. In addition, the 1 is equipped with newly-designed seats (M sport pews are available as an option, as are heating and ventilation functionality). Claimed luggage and utility capacity have remained the same at 380l and 1 200l.

All models are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. As a reminder, before, the only 1 Series model featuring this gearbox was the 118i, which the rest of the line-up transmitting power to the tarmac via an eight-speed self-shifter.

As a reminder, current 118d and 118i’s three-cylinder oil-burner and petrol engines produce 110 kW/350N.m and 103 kW/220N.m, respectively. However, a noteworthy mention, for the new M135i xDrive, BMW has lifted the flagship’s power output to 233kW (up by 8kW).
