Porsche unveils updated 911 Turbo S with hybrid boost

Quicker off the line and boasting a record-breaking brake setup, the electrified Turbo S sets a new benchmark for Porsche’s flagship sports car.

Porsche has whipped the wraps off the updated, 992.2-generation 911 Turbo S, with the German marque’s local arm announcing pricing for the most powerful 911 to date.

The revised 992-generation 911 Turbo S adopts the Stuttgart manufacturer’s T-Hybrid powertrain, which made its debut on the 992.2 GTS. However, whereas the latter features a single electric exhaust gas turbocharger (eTurbo), the Turbo S’s 3.6l flat-six is equipped with an additional eTurbo. The GTS’s 1.9kWh battery has been carried over to the flagship 911.

The updated 911 Turbo S’s electrified powertrain produces a peak power output of 523kW, an increase of 45kW over the 992.1 911 Turbo S’s 478kW. Torque has remained untouched, with 800N.m delivered to Porsche’s Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission with integrated electric motor. However, it is worth noting that, compared to its 992.1 predecessor, the 992.2 iteration’s torque is available in a broader swathe of the rev band – 2 300 to 6 000r/min versus 2 500 to 4 000r/min.

Porsche claims the 992.2 911 Turbo S Coupé completes the obligatory 0-100km/h sprint in 2.5 seconds, making it two-tenths of a second quicker to the one-tonne than the 992.1, which is one of the fastest accelerating cars ever tested by CAR magazine. In addition, it dispatches the 0-200km/h dash in only 8.4 seconds, an improvement of 0.5 seconds over the 992.1. The top speed is rated at 322km/h.

Stopping power is provided by Porsche’s Ceramic Composite Brake system, which features 420mm discs up front and 410mm (up 10mm) items aft – making it the largest PCCB setup ever fitted to a two-door Porsche. The 992.2 911 Turbo S is fitted with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels, wrapped in 255/35- and 325/30-size tyres, respectively.
