BAIC B30e HEV AWD performance tested in SA

CAR Magazine put the B30e AWD through its paces to see how closely it matches its claimed performance figures.

The BAIC B30 was introduced to South Africa in November 2025, with the model line-up available with the choice of two powertrain options: 138kW/305Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and hybrid – the latter pairing a four-cylinder turbopetrol of similar capacity with either only a single, front-mounted electric motor or a dual electric-motor setup in the FWD B30e and B30e AWD, respectively.

Featured here, the all-paw B30e produces a combined system output of 301kW and 685Nm of torque – good for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.0 seconds. But how would the most powerful B30 fare on CAR Magazine’s test strip? They put it through its paces to find out…

Acceleration times

On their test strip, the 1 708kg (tested) B30e AWD completed the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.15 seconds, nearly matching its maker’s claim, before covering the quarter mile in 15.33 seconds, at a speed of 143.07km/h. The BAIC reached the 1km marker in 29.15 seconds. In the overtaking acceleration stakes, the test unit sprinted between the 60-80, 80-100 and 100-120km/h increments in 1.64, 1.96 and 2.55 seconds, respectively.

Braking times

In their stringent 100-0km/h emergency braking regimen, the B30e’s ventilated front/solid rear disc brakes brought it to a halt in an average time of 2.89 seconds over a distance of 41.34m. The best and worst stopping times were 2.78 and 3.21 seconds, respectively.
