6 significant double-cab bakkies at Nampo 2026

From the groundbreaking debut of the Kia Tasman to Ford's heavy-duty Ranger Super Duty, discover the workhorses and luxury rigs that dominated Nampo this year.

The Nampo Harvest Day in Bothaville remains the ultimate playground for South Africa’s bakkie enthusiasts, and the 2026 edition has raised the bar with an impressive array of new arrivals and rugged refreshes. As the agricultural community gathered to witness the latest in farming technology, the spotlight has firmly shifted to the heavy-hitters of the double-cab segment.

New Toyota Hilux

Scheduled to launch in SA in June 2026, the new Hilux employs Toyota’s trusted 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2.8GD-6 motor produces 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque – the former and latter available from 3 000 and 1 600 r/min, respectively.

In models equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, the 2.8GD-6 unit churns out the same amount of power, though less torque, with 420 N.m on tap from a low 1 400 r/min. The ninth-generation Hilux will be available with 4×2 and part-time 4×4 drivetrains. A first for a Hilux, the new model adopts electric power steering.

Ford Ranger Super Duty

Boasting a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4 500 kg and a gross combination mass (GCM) of 8 000 kg, the Ford Ranger Super Duty has been confirmed to launch in SA in early 2027. Showcased in single- and double-cab body styles, the Blue Oval brand’s most robust Ranger has a braked towing and payload capacity of 4 500 and up to 1 982 kg, respectively.

The Ranger Super Duty features a unique chassis frame, heavy-duty front and rear axles, and reinforced suspension and tow bar mounts. Ford says this model’s new rear-diff is the strongest and largest ever fitted to a production Ranger.

The Ranger Super Duty employs Ford’s 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, which delivers 184 kW and 600 N.m to the road via a four-wheel drivetrain – the latter coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Updated Ford Ranger

In addition to the Ranger Super Duty, Ford SA also showcased the updated Ranger at NAMPO 2026. As a reminder, the revised local Ranger lineup ditches the firm’s 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine in favour of more models gaining the 184 kW/600 N.m 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, while an EcoBoost 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which produces 222 kW and 452 N.m, has been introduced. The 125 kW/405 N.m 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel unit remains, but has been upgraded for the new model range.

Updated Isuzu D-Max

Scheduled to launch in SA ‘soon’, the updated Isuzu D-Max retains the pre-facelifted model’s 1.9- and 3.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engines – the former and latter producing 110 kW/350 N.m and 140 kW/450 N.m, respectively. Although the 1.9-litre oil-burner has been replaced by a new 2.2-litre turbodiesel, churning out 120 kW and 400 N.m, in overseas markets, the new, more-powerful unit remains unconfirmed for SA.

Kia Tasman

Launched in SA in April 2026, the Tasman, which we’ve sampled in range-topping X-Pro guise, is Kia’s first foray into the bakkie segment.

Locally, the Tasman exclusively employs Hyundai-Kia’s 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, tuned to produce 154 kW and 440 N.m in this application. The oil-burner is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission – the latter paired with either a 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain.

Underpinned by a ladder-frame chassis, the Tasman measures 410 mm in length; making it 60 and 85 mm longer than the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, respectively. The Tasman’s width and wheelbase span 1 930 and 3 720 mm, respectively.

Nissan Navara Warrior

Along with displaying an array of heritage products, Nissan SA made use of Nampo 2026 to showcase the Navara Pro-4X Warrior. Developed in collaboration with Australian engineering company Premcar, the Warrior features several off-road upgrades.

This includes wider front and rear tracks, a suspension lift kit and revised rear suspension. The Warrior is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, shod in Maxxis Razr all-terrain rubber. This off-road-focused double-cab’s ground clearance is rated at 232 mm – in increase of 11 mm over the standard Navara.

The Warrior employs Nissan’s 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine. The four-cylinder unit produces 140 kW and 450 N.m, delivered to the road via a part-time four-wheel-drive system paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission.
