Watch: Beautiful electrical storm strikes in the Lowveld
A video taken at the Kruger Gate Hotel shows a thunderstorm with several lightning strikes.
While severe weather can cause widespread damage and unsettle a few nerves, it often makes for spectacular views.
In an example of the latter, Frith Thomas of Irvine Partners shared a video that shows an electrical storm over the Kruger National Park, as seen from the Kruger Gate Hotel.
The video was taken on Monday night and, as Thomas said: “Shows intense, rapid-fire lightning illuminating a towering cloud formation behind a silhouetted leadwood tree – it’s the Lowveld at its most raw and dramatic.”
South African Weather Service meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela told Caxton Network News that a severe weather warning for severe thunderstorms had been issued for the Lowveld and northern parts of Mpumalanga at the time, with the system producing frequent cloud-to-cloud lightning as it intensified.
