Grade 1 learner found hanged in the school bathroom

The learner requested to go to the bathroom, and when he failed to return to class, another learner was sent to look for him.

A six-year-old Grade 1 learner was found hanging at Dorothy Langa Primary School in Zone Two, Seshego, in Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the learner requested to go to the bathroom, and when he failed to return to class, another learner was sent to look for him on Friday, Review Online reported.

“The deceased was transported to the local clinic, where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” Ngoepe said.

The motive and circumstances behind this incident is unknown at this stage, but police say their investigation as well as the autopsy will tell.

Ngoepe said police have condemned this as an act of child neglect and poor child-safety measures.

“Communities, including educators, are advised to put child safety first on the basis that their movement and whereabouts must be monitored at all times to prevent this type of incidents from happening,” he added.
