Boxing CEO Loyiso Mtya suspended
After week's of scrutiny and criticism in the media, the members of Boxing South Africa's board have taken decisive action over claims made against acting CEO Loyiso Mtya by enforcing a suspension.
In a letter sent out to licensees and stakeholders on Monday, chairperson of the board Ntambi Ravele confirmed that Mtya has been suspended indefinitely over allegations of corruption and maladministration.
It’s not the first time that Mtya has faced disciplinary sanctions after serving a suspension in 2011. At the time, no reason was given for the punishment and Mtya was eventually reinstated in his role.
The suspension, with an investigation pending, came following a series of meetings by the board over the past fortnight. At the first, on July 5, it was decided that a preliminary investigation should take place, and this week it was decided that the seriousness of the allegations could not be ignored.
“The board considered the outcome of the preliminary investigation and found the preliminary findings to be serious and therefore resolved to place Mr Mtya on a precautionary suspension pending the outcome of a full investigation,” the letter, signed by Ravele, stated.
Mtya had been acting in the role of Boxing South Africa CEO following the suspension of Moffat Qithi after revelations that he lied about his criminal record during the recently concluded defamation case between BSA and promoter Branco Milenkovic.
At this stage, no indication has been given as to when the issue surrounding Qithi’s suspension would be resolved.
The letter also stated that it would be a case of business as usual at the organisation, with support coming from the Department of Sport and Recreation.
