NMB Mayor Nqaba Bhanga faces culpable homicide probe

After Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Executive Mayor Nqaba Bhanga was involved in a fatal two-car accident at close to midnight on Saturday evening, speculation has been raised that he may not have been in a fit state to drive himself after celebrating his birthday.

Bhanga, a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor and the party’s Eastern Cape leader, was hospitalised at the Netcare Greenacres Hospital for what were initially thought to be “minor injuries”, according to mayoral spokesperson Leander Kruger – but they may in fact be more serious.

Over half of the 2020 school year lost due to Covid-19

During a sobering media briefing by Department of Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga on Sunday, it was revealed that the teaching losses since the advent of the pandemic in 2020 will likely affect many learners for decades to come. 

Learning has been consistently interrupted throughout last year, and intermittently affected this year. Some schools are still unable to accommodate full classes of learners, with social distancing implementation continuing to be a challenge. 

‘Sphithiphithi Evaluator’ arrested, social media reacts

The term ‘Sphithiphithi Evaluator’ has been trending all Sunday morning after reports that the woman behind the @_AfricanSoil Twitter account had been arrested after being accused of being involved in widespread public violence that took place in July.

By Saturday morning, the Sphithiphithi Evaluator (@_AfricanSoil) Twitter account had 59,900 followers. By the afternoon, that number had shot up to 62,300 and continued growing by the minute.

Gauteng reaches 3 million mark for Covid-19 vaccines

Gauteng reached a record total of three million Covid-19 vaccines this week, bringing the total of fully vaccinated people in the province to 1,310,372. 

On Friday alone, the Gauteng health department said over 75,000 jabs were administered.
