Delivery man shot dead in attempted hijacking

The victim was hit in the upper body but managed to drive another 200m or so before crashing into the fence of another house.

The driver of a delivery van was shot and killed after an attempted hijacking on Sheffield Street, Nigel, in Heidelberg, on Thursday.

“The shooting occurred around 10:10am after a delivery was made to a private residence,” police spokesperson Sergeant Nellie Dwaba said.

It was confirmed that a group of armed suspects driving in a white VW Polo pulled up behind the van and opened fire. The driver then sped away, Heidelberg Nigel Heraut reported.

The victim was hit in the upper body, but managed to drive another 200 metre or so before crashing into the fence of another house.

He was declared dead on the scene.

The suspects fled the scene.

The passenger of the delivery van escaped unharmed and was treated for shock by EMM paramedics.

Police are on the hunt for the suspects.
