Guards ambushed in Pretoria ATM bombing

An undisclosed amount was taken from the Capitec ATM and 13 empty cartridges were found at the scene, police said.

An ATM was bombed in Soshanguve in the early hours of Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said three armed men ambushed security guards at Batho plaza in block KK, Soshanguve  before going on to bomb the Capitec bank ATM, Rekord North reported.

“Security guards heard a gunshot outside and quickly took cover and locked themselves in the guard room. But the three armed men forced entry into the room, handcuffed the guards, took their cell phones and went out,” said Maluleka.

He said after a while, the security guards heard an explosion followed by gunshots.

“An undisclosed amount was taken from the Capitec ATM, and 13 empty cartridges were found at the scene,” he said.

The guards were rescued by the police upon their arrival.

Members of the explosives unit attended the scene. No one was injured.

An investigation is underway, police said.
