Infant among six killed in gruesome Limpopo crash

Four other passengers of the bakkie, aged between eight and fifteen brought were also killed, as well as the 35-year-old truck driver.  


An infant was identified among the dead in carnage of a motor vehicle crash in Limpopo that occurred in the early hours of Boxing Day, 26 December 2022, the Department of Transport and Community Safety in the province confirmed.

At least six people were pronounced dead on impact, when a bakkie and a truck collided head-on.

According to reports, the accident occurred on a stretch of road commonly known as the Manyathela curve, between the Sasol Garage and the Baobab Toll Plaza on the N1.29 North in Vhembe District.

Besides tha baby, four other passengers of the bakkie, aged between eight and fifteen, were killed, while the 35-year-old driver of the truck brought the death toll to six.

Emergency workers and law enforcement officials who responded to the scene of the crash, said that speeding could have possibly been the cause of the fatal crash.

Meanwhile, MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, Florence Radzilani sent her condolences to the families of the deceased.

“We are saddened by these fatalities and send our deepest condolences to the families that are affected in this tragic incident. We continue to plead with all motorists to obey the rules of the road, for everyone to arrive at their respective destinations alive and sound, ” she said.

Three men killed in crash near Phalaborwa

Three more people were killed on the roads in a separate incident in Lulekani, just outside Phalaborwa, when four motor vehicles were also involved in a fatal crash.

Police have not yet been able to allocate identities to all the dead and are seeking assistance from the public to help identify the three men who succumbed to their injuries following that crash on 23 December 20220.

The vehicles, namely a Toyota Quantum minibus, a Volkswagen Polo, a Ford Ranger, and a Toyota Hilux VVTi had slammed into each other, on the bend.
