Joburg mayor says more than R3b ‘loot’ will be recovered

'This was blatant looting of state resources. And people of the country will see [in] the next few weeks and months,' Mashaba said.

City of Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says the City will recover more than R3 billion that was allegedly looted by the previous administration.

Mashaba said the Auditor-General’s report showed that wasteful expenditure reached nearly R27 million, with nearly R8 million being wasted in the last financial year.

Speaking to 702, Mashaba said the City would make sure that all the money stolen would be recovered.

“Things are getting worse. If you look at state-owned entities … we are actually regressing as a City.

“Corruption in the City of Johannesburg was no longer corruption. This was blatant looting of state resources. And people of the country will see [in] the next few weeks and months. I am putting every available resource to ensure we recover money stolen because some of this money was stolen and blatantly stolen for that matter.”

“So we will ensure that we correct it. We will make sure that we have proper financial controls in place.”

The mayor also tweeted: “[Thirty-two] officials failed to disclose their interest, a close family member, partner or associate in contracts valued at R308 836 314”.

“Eighty suppliers were found to have submitted false declarations of interest to the amount of R954 931 226.

“These matters will be investigated further and disciplinary steps taken, based on the results of the investigations.”
