Keep an eye on ‘Can Do’ Gayton

McKenzie is prepared to sup with whatever political devil will benefit him and his party most.

Gayton McKenzie is a sort of a loveable rogue – the one-time gangster and jailbird definitely does have charisma. But at the same time, he is a ruthless and wily politician.

And, he is clearly about to leverage his influence to the utmost, setting up himself and his party – the Patriotic Alliance (PA) – as future “kingmakers” in both local government and national politics.

He’s just stepped down as mayor of Beaufort West and got a number of community projects up and running in a town which had suffered under ANC neglect.

That proves that, whatever his motives, he is a “can do” man. He doesn’t like the suggestions that the PA is a “coloured” party – although it has its roots in those communities who felt marginalised … they used to be “not white enough” and now they are “not black enough”.

McKenzie is prepared to sup with whatever political devil will benefit him and his party most and, having enough seats in some municipalities to sway votes in councils with shaky coalitions, he’s become the figure other parties cannot afford to ignore. His fanning of anti-foreigner sentiment is a worry, but accurately divines the feelings of many South Africans.

He’s a man to watch.
