Pretoria man dies from protest injuries

The deceased suffered blows to the head from what might have been a panga and bricks.

A young man from Pretoria West died on Monday from injuries he suffered in a recent protest in Bremer Street.

Emergency service Best Care spokesperson Xander Loubser sad Stephan Harris, 28, was declared braindead in Kalafong hospital around 11.30am and succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.

“Harris was assaulted in the Bremer Street settler camps almost two weeks ago and rushed to Kalafong Hospital in a critical condition,” said Loubser.

“Harris showed improvement in the last week and was eventually taken off life support to breathe on his own.”

He said Harris had suffered blows to the head by what might have been from a panga and bricks.

Dozens of disgruntled residents in and around Bremer Street voiced their anger on 27 January over the placement of temporary settlers from the Jeffsville informal settlement in Atteridgeville to municipal land in their area.

The metro explained the residents were moved because a sinkhole had developed in their own settlement, but the people of  Bremer Street alleged the presence of the newcomers would make crime in the area even worse.
